Peshtemal is a woven fabric that has evolved from the historical Turkish hammam tradition going back 600 years. Peshtemal hammam clothes were widely used as a wrap when men and women in the Ottoman era were washing in the public hammam baths to cover their bodies. Now, they have moved beyond the boundaries of hammam and have become trendy bath, beach, and travel towels high in demand. In the UK, they are commonly known as Hammam Towels.
Hammam towels have a very distinctive stripy pattern with hand-finished tassels on the fringes which make them truly authentic. They are 100% pure cotton. Linen and bamboo blends are also sought-after. The average size of the hammam bath sheet is 90 x 180 cm and the hand towel is 50 x 90 cm. And the average weight is 250 grams. Due to their flat-woven nature, these hammam towels are absolutely lightweight and compact to pack & carry. They have made a name for themselves for being very absorbent and fast drying.
