Different Types of Hammam Towels

Based on the frequent questions we received from our customers, I concluded that hammam towels and their thickness require further explanation as a guide.

Cotton and Olive offers a wide range of hammam towels designed for different purposes. All hammam towels, including the thickest one available online, are still lighter in weight than the average terry towels and much quicker to dry. It goes without saying that they are more absorbent. Their sizes are approximately the same (100 x 180 cm average)

But what differentiates one hammam towel from the other? The answer is the weight and the way they are constructed.

1) The pack light hammam towels – These are the lightest and the most compact hammam towels. They are absorbent and quick-drying, ideal for travelling, camping, swimming classes, music festivals and backpackers on the go. It saves space whilst offering versatility in use.

They are simple-weave and have a single layer.

2) These cotton hammam towels are only slightly heavier and thicker than the Category 1 towels.

They are fantastic for holidays, families with young children and teenagers, swimming courses, gym, travelling and boat cruises to name just a few. We have a large selection in this category, as it appeals to a wider range of users.

They are simple-weave and have a single layer.

Which models are in this category? Avis, Indigo, Milas, Olympos, Pasha, Trendy and Twist.

3) The hammam towels under this category have a different construction compared to Categories 1 and 2. These are jacquard-woven towels, and 2 extra fine layers of cotton are attached to each other to form a double-layered fabric. All jacquard towels are pre-washed and shrunk. So, they are very soft and pleasant to touch from day one, and so much fun with their summer prints and vibrant colours. A double layer doesn’t necessarily imply being heavier compared to Category 2, yet they are cosier. They also make great travel blankets. Category 3 hammam towels are a great choice for families, beach holidays, pools, and pool parties.

They are jacquard-weave and have a double- layer.

Which models are in this category? Bodrum, Neptune, Reef, Seahorse and Starfish.

4) The hammam towels in this last category are the heaviest and the thickest we have on offer. Reminder: even our heaviest hammam towels are lighter in weight compared to fluffy cotton towels with pile and quicker to dry as well. Category 4 towels make fantastic bath towels. These are the towels of wellness with their softness and cosiness. Some of these hammam towels are 100% cotton, and some are cotton and linen blends.

Category 4 splits into 2 sub-categories

a) Single-layered, high-density hammam towels. They are preferred for their durability and strong structure.  Examples are Knidos and Tuana cotton hammam towels.

b) Double-layered jacquard-weave towels. These popular towels are super cosy and have subtle colour choices to lift the spirits.  Examples are Hipster, Indie, Lulu, Thea.

5) This individual category contains double-faced hammam towels. They are in general as the same thickness and weight as Category 3 jacquard towels. However, they are single-layered. They are double-faced, meaning one side of the towel is flat hammam weave, and the reverse is low-pile terry cotton. This category stands somewhere between a hammam towel and a regular terry bath towel to offer the best of both.
